About

Hi, my name is Lili Kurzfeld, I am a Fine Art and Film major studying in my final year at Lancaster University.

Fine Art

Within my art, I work primarily with oil paint and coloured pencils to develop my practice. My work consists of a range of different themes and approaches and media, spanning from oil on canvas to coloured pencil on paper. Contextually, my paintings focus on the theme of ‘uncomfortable mundanity’, with a key focus on constructed interior spaces, or in areas associated with safety and comfort, now seemingly abandoned and left behind. This idea of absence, captured within a moment in time is supposed to reflect the fine balance of security and sensitivity, walking in an environment that is usually associated with safety, but now presents something more sinister. My work looks at human nature, the effect of people, their being there or their absence, and how this can construe a narrative within a piece. During my spare time, I also enjoy drawing portraiture in the style of photographic realism.

Within my degree field, I have studied the history of art theory, and the progression of art evolution, with analysis of art theologians and philosophical and cultural concepts. Specifically, my thesis study has allowed me to broaden my area of research, giving me the opportunity to look into religion, it’s history, and it’s connection with art. Regarding the Christian Reformation, and the depictions of Jesus Christ and His suffering as an individual, my thesis research has led me to study how these depictions were consequently affected by the Reformation movement, the history and theory of religion, and the effect Christianity had on art as a whole throughout time. Looking deeply at the philosophical concept of the ‘individual’ and how this idea was birthed, and has continued to grow and shape art and modernity throughout history.

Film

The film side of my study focuses predominantly on the analysis of films, the formal and technical composition of a film, allowing me to create a deep analysis of this field of study. My research has covered an array of different time periods, starting with the beginnings of cinema, to the Classical ‘Golden’ era of Hollywood, to the revolutionary and radical period of New Hollywood, all the way up to the present day. With a deep understanding of film theory, practice, and technique, I have gained an understanding of the history of cinema, and the framework knowledge of filmic technique and theory, allowing me to undertake a detailed analysis of film and cinema, through the form of essays and presentations. Moreover, my study has developed to the practical side of filmmaking too, as I have experience working on a variety of different film sets, both behind and in front of the camera, in pre-production and post-production. Some of my film credits include working as a production designer for the short film ‘In the Bedroom’ (Konieczny, 2023), where I was in charge of make-up, hair, and costume design. I also worked as a scriptwriter and Producer for the short film ‘A Pair of Boxers’ (Li, 2023), where I facilitated and overlooked the entire means of operation before and during shooting, coordinating a team through one dictionary vision, as well as delegating the financing, and marketing and promotion through social media. Finally, I experienced acting when shooting for the short film ‘Video Pal’ (Newington, 2025). My film grounding then lies primarily within the study and close, in-depth analysis of film, with part experience in practical filmmaking.

My aims and what I want

My goal is to enter a field where I can excel in an artistic space and continue to grow and learn in the areas I work strongly in. I would like to see an environment where I can get hands-on with work and be guided toward furthering my knowledge while being given the freedom to express my creativity and my goals effectively. Creating work that I enjoy and ultimately, doing what pleases the Lord, being able to love Jesus as I do so.
